What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
MLD is a gentle massage that helps fluid move throughout the body by activating the lymphatic system. It is essential because it can promote immune system functions, the body’s healing process, pain relief, and general Relaxation. This modality is patented as the Vodder method, so if a massage does not follow the Vodder method, then it is not MLD.
Is MLD right for you?
As anyone can benefit from MLD, the most common cases where it’s used are: pre-/post-surgical, acute injury, Lymphedema and General Edema, Lipedema, after a lymphadenectomy, and nervous system relaxation. Some false claims about MLD need to be addressed: It is extremely helpful for the body, but it is NOT muscle scraping or body sculpting. It does not aid directly in weight loss. What it CAN do is reduce inflammation in specific areas due to excess lymph fluid, and jump-start the immune system by activating the lymph nodes to help them push waste to the liver, where it can be filtered out.
MLD for Edema:
Edema is an acute inflammation (swelling) caused by the body’s healing mechanism. Edema is commonly seen in acute injury and post-surgical conditions. Edema is temporary, and there’s no damage to the lymphatic system. MLD can significantly reduce the amount of fluid, improve the healing process, and relieve pain.
MLD for Lymphedema:
Lymphedema is a form of edema in which the body’s lymphatic system is damaged. It is a lifetime condition that requires a medical diagnosis. Typically, a result of lymph node removal or severe trauma, it can also be genetic. MLD will reduce the swelling, relieve pain, and create new lymphatic pathways if needed. MLD can not cure Lymphedema, but can greatly improve the symptoms. Moving the fluid to reduce the risk of cellulitis and other infections is vital.
MLD for Lipedema:
Lipedema is a chronic medical condition that requires a doctors diagnosis. It is caused by an excess or abnormal fat cell and connective tissue build up. typically in the extremeites. It will present equally on both sides of the body (excluding the hand and foot) It typically presents in women and is genetic. It is a lifelong diagnosis. MLD can help reduce the pain and relax the client while boosting the immune system.
MLD for immune boost and Relaxation:
The lymph nodes have active white blood cells awaiting the fluid to help filter out water and waste to create a protein-rich fluid that gets returned to the cardiovascular system. MLD can boost your immune system by activating the lymph nodes and speeding up filtration rates. This modality is also very relaxing as it is a light touch massage.
If you are intrested in trying MLD but still not sure if it’s right for you. Reach out to your therapist and ask questions. A CMLDT must complete a 45 hour trainning of the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system as well as proper techniques.
