What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) at Dreamcatcher Wellness is a gentle, specialized massage technique designed to support the body’s lymphatic system. Using light, rhythmic movements, MLD helps encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid throughout the body, supporting the immune system, healing processes, pain relief, and deep relaxation.
This service is performed using the Vodder Method, the original and patented approach to Manual Lymphatic Drainage. If a session does not follow the Vodder Method, it is not considered true MLD

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
The lymphatic system plays a vital role in immune function and fluid balance. Unlike the cardiovascular system, it does not have a pump and relies on movement and gentle stimulation to function effectively.
MLD works by:
- Activating lymph nodes
- Encouraging excess fluid to move toward healthy lymphatic pathways
- Supporting the body’s natural detoxification and healing processes
This modality uses very light touch and is often described as calming, restorative, and deeply relaxing.
Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Right for You?
While many people can benefit from MLD, it is most commonly used for:
- Pre- and post-surgical support
- Acute injury and inflammation
- General edema (swelling)
- Lymphedema
- Lipedema
- After lymph node removal (lymphadenectomy)
- Nervous system regulation and relaxation
It’s important to clarify common misconceptions. Manual Lymphatic Drainage:
- Is not muscle scraping
- Is not body sculpting
- Does not directly cause weight loss
What MLD can do is help reduce inflammation caused by excess lymphatic fluid and support immune function by assisting the body in moving waste toward the liver for filtration.
MLD for Edema (Swelling)
Edema is a form of acute inflammation caused by the body’s natural healing response. It is commonly seen after injury or surgery and is typically temporary, with no permanent damage to the lymphatic system.
MLD can:
- Significantly reduce fluid buildup
- Improve healing timelines
- Help relieve pain and discomfort
MLD for Lymphedema
Lymphedema is a chronic condition in which the lymphatic system has been damaged. It requires a medical diagnosis and is often the result of lymph node removal, trauma, or genetic factors.
While MLD cannot cure lymphedema, it can:
- Reduce swelling
- Relieve discomfort and heaviness
- Support the creation of alternative lymphatic pathways
- Help reduce the risk of cellulitis and infection
Ongoing management and fluid movement are essential for symptom control.
MLD for Lipedema
Lipedema is a chronic medical condition that also requires a doctor’s diagnosis. It involves abnormal fat cell and connective tissue buildup, most commonly affecting the extremities. It typically presents symmetrically on both sides of the body (excluding hands and feet) and primarily affects women.
MLD can help:
- Reduce pain and tenderness
- Support relaxation
- Encourage lymphatic flow
- Boost immune system function
While lipedema is a lifelong condition, MLD can be a supportive part of symptom management.
MLD for Immune Support & Relaxation
Lymph nodes contain white blood cells that filter waste and excess fluid before returning protein-rich fluid to the cardiovascular system. Manual Lymphatic Drainage helps activate these nodes and increase filtration efficiency.
Because MLD uses very light pressure, it is also highly effective for:
- Nervous system regulation
- Stress reduction
- Deep relaxation
Many clients find this modality calming both physically and mentally.
Training & Expertise
A Certified Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapist (CMLDT) must complete a minimum of 45 hours of specialized training in lymphatic anatomy, physiology, and proper technique.
At Dreamcatcher Wellness, we pride ourselves on education, skill, and thoughtful care. Each session is approached with intention and respect for the body’s natural processes.
Session Length & What to Expect
